Bachelor of Science Degree

The Bachelor of Science in Communication degree offers a performance-based model that prepares students with the skills in ethical decision making, critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration needed for a career in the evolving world of public relations, and digital communications. Students build a foundation in communication overall with an emphasis on applied communication-professional writing and speaking, design and visual communication, and organizational and strategic communication. This major offers multiple opportunities for students to build practical skills and apply those skills in a variety of contexts.

Courses in the major include:

Students will identify the roles and tasks of a communication professional and actively practice communication techniques (written, visual, and oral) through presentations, multimedia tools, the production of media releases, and articles. Creative problem-solving, brainstorming, and storytelling establish the foundation for invention, while students use revision strategies and tactics to build skills critical to effective communication and public relations practice. Students will explore a variety of technology and social media tools in the context of communication processes overall. Tools will be applied to the analysis of audience needs and the creation of effective communication artifacts. Data visualization, ethical handling of data, and the interrelationship between inter- and intrapersonal communication and technology will be addressed. Students will analyze problems in order to evaluate solutions related to communication goals. By exploring the relationships between design thinking, critical thinking, and creative thinking, students will build skills to innovate personally, as well as, professionally, and to meet the needs of organizations and clients. Students create multilayered, targeted, integrated communication artifacts that reflect select principles and trends in aesthetics, layout, and design. Students will analyze media messages and judge them based on awareness of integrity and ethical behavior; will self-assess personal ethics and apply high standards to information gathering and processing; and will explore societal impacts on ethics and organization. Case study scenarios will enable practice in leadership, ethics, transparency, and the legal aspects of communications that have an impact on organization and working teams. Students will generate creative solutions to group and organizational communication problems using networking, team building, negotiation, and leadership strategies. Scenarios and case studies will be used to investigate internal and external communication, including crisis communication. Focus will be on best practices and communication strategies to establish trusting relationships with customers, clients, and stakeholders. Students will build awareness of intercultural communication, inclusiveness and diversity issues, and the global marketplace; will explore various cultural norms and craft communications that are directed to diverse audiences and global markets; and will build sensitivity to the complexities of intercultural communication, in order to hone skills in working with diverse teams. This course examines central components of strategic communications-how to communicate meaning and persuade-and how to implement these strategies ethically. Students will explore how various persuasive tactics work to address real-world communications issues as they consider the effects of their communications on relevant stakeholders, organizational development, and processes of building and maintaining personal and professional relationships. Students engage in a virtual business environment and develop skills related to entry into new organizations, understanding workplace expectations, and communicating effectively in organizations. Students complete simulated assignments and are evaluated by workplace standards. Acceptance into the Communication (COMM) accelerated degree completion program.
Students build a communication campaign and create a foundation for entry into the workforce. An ePortfolio will incorporate assignments from previous coursework, the finished campaign, and a presentation. Acceptance into the Communication (COMM) accelerated degree completion program.
This course prepares students for success in their academic and professional careers. The foundation for learning is established for professional skill development through practical experience with the University's four essential learning outcomes - communication, problem solving, collaboration, and citizenship.
